What are Drivers?
The drivers are small software files that provide instructions allowing Windows to operate the advanced components you installed in your new computer. Without these files your computer will be sluggish and unable to maximize the components' performance to their full extent.There are quite a few drivers to install. Luckily it is quick and easy to do. Several of your components will have come with CD or floppy disks in their boxes. These disks contain the driver files.
Components likely to require a driver file are the motherboard, the video card, the monitor, the mouse/keyboard, the printer and the scanner. It is possible other parts may also come with a driver disk that needs to be installed. Components such as printers, scanners, cameras, CD/DVD burners will also come with software that enables you to use them properly. You can install those programs after you install the drivers.
Motherboard Drivers
Let's install the drivers on the disk that came with the motherboard first. Just insert the CD into the optical drive. After the window opens you should see a list of drivers. Install them all. Just follow the on-screen instructions. The process may require one or more re-boots of the computer during the installation process. You will probably hear sound from the speakers for the first time.Monitor Drivers
To install the drivers for the monitor just insert the disk that came with the monitor and follow the instructions. Not all monitors come with a driver disk. If yours does not you can skip this step.Video Card Drivers
To install the drivers for the graphics card just insert the disk that came in the box. Follow the on-screen instructions. You may notice improved graphics quality once this driver is installed.Remaining Drivers and Software
Go ahead and install any remaining drivers for the rest of the components. If you bought a printer or scanner it will come with software. If you have a digital camera it probably came with a disk as well.Driver Updates
Periodically, equipment manufacturers will release updated drivers for their components. It is wise to check their websites once in a while to get the latest drivers. The video card is the component that is most likely to need updated drivers. If you buy a program or game that your video card is unable to handle, the first thing to do is update the driver. That often fixes the problem. Often the manufacturer includes a driver update utility on the driver disk that came with the component. Alternatively you can just go to their website.Your computer should now be running smoothly with sound and excellent graphics.
